By

What you need to know!

Creating your website, might be quite challenging, so a lot of people try to run away from this challenge by hiring somebody else to create it for them, why wasting your money when you can create your website yourself? All with some clicks and typing, no need to become a professional before you can create your own website. There are different types of website so I must make it clear to you that if you are planning to create a social website or an online store, this article might not be of help, and consulting a professional is the best advice I can offer. But if you are looking forward to creating a personal website or a business organization, group website, or exhibition website, then take your time to learn about using what you already have on your PC to create your own website.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Personal Computer
  2. Window Xp professional or higher versions
  3. At least 1 GB flash drive.
  4. Microsoft office software.
  5. A lay man knowledge about how computer works

That’s all you need to create your website!, and all this things are not expensive.

WHERE TO BEGIN:

After installing your Microsoft office software on your computer, you will see all the programs that made up the software on your computer, what we will be using; to create the website is the MICROSOFT FRONTPAGE program, double click on the Microsoft FrontPage icon to launch the application, the application environment looks exactly like that of Microsoft word so you wont be having any problem in using it, click on the file menu, and select the New sub menu, Click on the page or web submenu, then a wizard window will pop up, asking you what type of website you want to create, under the website template there are ten default type of website, but you can always choose a different template from the Microsoft website, the wizard window would list all the type of available type of website that you can create

The default templates are:

  1. One page web
  2. Corporate presence web
  3. Personal web
  4. Customer support web
  5. Discussion web
  6. Project web
  7. Share point based team web
  8. Empty web
  9. Import web
  10. Database interface web

Those are the basic type of webs you can create with Microsoft FrontPage, you would have to choose which category, the type of website you want to create fall into, here I will be choosing the personal web template, when you click on the category in which the type of your website falls into, the wizard will automatically generate all the pages that are supposed to be on your website, the beauty of using this wizard is that it makes your work easier and faster, and you can always add or delete pages you don’t want.

Basic Functions you should know

NAVIGATION:

After the pages have been generated click on the navigation icon at the left side bar, a page which shows the arrangement of your website pages will come up, this navigation screen simple explains how your website pages will be linked, it can be toggled with, by clicking and dragging the pages icons to where ever you want it to be, you can also use this to select which page comes first and which pages comes last,

HYPERLINK:

Clicking on the hyperlinked icon on the side bar will also show a page which gives detailed diagram of how each page on your website is linked together, the purpose of clicking on the hyperlink is to know which page will link to the other, and which pages comes first, toggling with the pages is not a problem, because you can always come back to amend any mistake you might have made, by now I believe you are already familiar with the Microsoft FrontPage Environment, to start the real work of designing your website.

FOLDER:

Click on the Folder icon at the left side bar, this should show you all the pages contained in your website, this is also where you can add more pages to your website or delete some existing pages you don’t want. When you are done with adding or removing pages, you can click on the page you want to start with, your homepage is nicknamed INDEX.HTM, it is advisable to start with the homepages, because it links to every pages of the website, so you can easily navigate to edit other pages by clicking on the links to the page.

After clicking on the INDEX.HTM, the default homepage for your website should show up, the homepage content will be default so you would have to edit it to insert your own real contents, When the page shows up, you would have to edit and add contents to your website, these procedure are very simple, even for a beginner, insert pictures and logos, using the same method you are familiar with, in Microsoft word. If you want to navigate other pages all you need to do is hold the control key on your keyboard then click on the hyperlink.

THEMES

Another important thing to know is about the theme you want for your website, to select the type of theme you want for your website, click on the format column on the toolbar, then there is a sub menu icon for theme, click on the theme sub menu and select any type of theme you want from varieties of theme that as already been installed on your computer, the good news is that you can also download another type of theme, or even design the theme you want yourself. All this steps are self explanatory; all you have to do is click! You can always decide what you want yours to look like.

There is another important thing to take note, while editing your website, there are two modes to do so, it is either you do it in the Normal way of using the HTML source code, to me using the normal way is very convenient and fast, to switch from one mode to another, you will see two small icon at the bottom of the Microsoft front page, click which mode you prefer You can make use of the simple tools like copy, cut, paste, bold, italics, underline, e.t.c.

NOTE: It is advisable to save your work as you progress, and you can always preview your website in a browser even before publishing it, saving your website is the same procedure with saving your document on Microsoft word

After reading this I just recalled that I have Frontpage in my hard drive but never bothered to open it. I delved right away to Wordpress and been hanging out in the web stuck in doing links, etc. Is Frontpage compatible with putting backlinks, etc? Thank you for this.

adeaugustus 9 months ago

Yes moiragallaga, Frontpage is highly compatible with putting backlinks, that is the main fuction of hyperlinks you can always add any hyperlink to your website page, and when visiotrs click on it, they will be directed to the link. thanks for stopping by.

Great advice to people who don't have any coding experience. I generally write in a notepad equivalent but I've been doing HTML/XML/PHP/MySQL for twelve years or so. Voted-up and useful.
